Why teams turn it on
Real guild resolution
Unknown invites are resolved to their target server — not just matched as a string — so raiders cannot hide behind wrappers, multi-hop vanity links, or “harmless looking” short URLs.
Your allowlist, your rules
Whitelist apex domains or wildcards like *.cdn.example.com. Exempt trusted roles, channels, or specific (user, channel) pairs when partners need to post links staff should ignore.
Escalation that cools down
Strikes decay on a window you set. First hits can delete or warn; repeats can jail — without a permanent rap sheet for a one-off mistake.
Same brain on both platforms
Allowlist policy is shared conceptually across Discord and Telegram; enforcement matches what each platform can do (delete, restrict, strike).
How it works
1. A message lands
ModShield inspects links and Discord invites before the channel fills with copy-paste ads. Invites are followed to their real destination guild when the platform allows resolution.
2. Allowlist decides
Whitelisted domains pass. Everything else is treated as unwanted advertising unless an exemption (role, channel, or pair) applies.
3. Action + memory
The message can be deleted, the author DMed, and a strike recorded. Repeat hits escalate according to your policy — including jail — and strikes can decay so clean members are not stuck forever.
Real situations
Competing server spam
Someone drops dsc.gg / discord.gg invites for a rival community. Resolution hits the real guild ID so rebranded vanity links still trip the filter.
Phishing and “free nitro”
Short links and lookalike domains fail the allowlist. Staff domains stay whitelisted; everything else is removed in one pass.
Partner promo channels
A #partners channel or partner role is exempt so legitimate campaigns post freely without turning the filter off server-wide.
FAQ
Will it delete every link?
No. Only non-whitelisted links (and invites, depending on settings). Your allowlist and exemptions define what is allowed.
What about vanity invite shorteners?
Common vanity hosts are followed when possible so the filter judges the real destination, not just the short URL string.
